Free Geek Vancouver loves to give back

Free Geek is a learning-centric environment. In addition to many volunteer training opportunities, we offer free tech-support workshops. We also love to support other non-profit and social change organizations in Vancouver when possible.

Open Help Night

DUE TO COVID-19 OPEN HELP NIGHT IS SUSPENDED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

Join us for a free drop-in night of skill-sharing, problem-solving, and education. All are welcome, from beginners to pros.

Getting Help

Want to try free and open source software, install GNU/Linux on your computer, or have a more complex question? Drop in and write your name and question on the whiteboard; a volunteer helper will come find you and lend a hand.

We assist folks who have open source software issues, hardware problems, or who are just plain curious. If you want to see what free and open source is all about, or try the Ubuntu operating system, this is the perfect opportunity!

If you are already running a distribution of GNU/Linux, you might consider bringing your computer down so we can work together to solve your difficulties.

Assistance is by donation, which goes to Free Geek to cover operating costs.

Helping Others

We're always in need of extra helpers with skills and patience!

Particular areas in demand: GNU/Linux & wireless, Ubuntu installs, hardware issues. Feel free to drop by and let us know you've come to help.

Where & When

  • Wednesdays, 6:30 - 9:30 pm at Free Geek
  • Entry via back door. Bike parking located at the back. Unfortunately our location is currently not wheelchair accessible.
  • No pre-registration is required; first-come, first-served.

Hardware Grants

UPDATE: The Hardware Grants Program has been temporarily suspended until further notice.

Whenever possible, Free Geek provides free computer hardware to non-profit and social change organizations in British Columbia. Desktop computers, flat-screen monitors and certain other peripherals are often available. Be mindful, however, that inventory is entirely dependent on what other people have donated to us. Consequently, less common items such as laptops, tablets, smartphones, and higher-end computers and components are typically not available.

To request a hardware grant, please fill out this application form. Please provide as much detail as possible. Qualified or potentially qualified organizations will be contacted for a follow up. A valid phone number and email is required.
